death by veganism--or propaganda?
Today's New York Times featured an op-ed called "Death by Veganism," penned by Nina Planck, author of “Real Food: What to Eat and Why.” A businesswoman with meat and dairy business interests, her book touts--surprise, surprise--the virtues of dairy, eggs, meat, fish, and even lard. I would hardly deem her view as objective or balanced. Tonight, I sent in my response to the New York Times-- [scroll below the op-ed]. And I encourage you to send your 150-word or less, polite response, as well, to letters@nytimes.com. The more letters they get, the better our chance of having responses printed.
Nina Planck's Op-ed...
Death by Veganism
By NINA PLANCK
Published: May 21, 2007
When Crown Shakur died of starvation, he was 6 weeks old and weighed 3.5 pounds. His vegan parents, who fed him mainly soy milk and apple juice, were convicted in Atlanta recently of murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty.
This particular calamity — at least the third such conviction of vegan parents in four years — may be largely due to ignorance. But it should prompt frank discussion about nutrition.
I was once a vegan. But well before I became pregnant, I concluded that a vegan pregnancy was irresponsible. You cannot create and nourish a robust baby merely on foods from plants.
Indigenous cuisines offer clues about what humans, naturally omnivorous, need to survive, reproduce and grow: traditional vegetarian diets, as in India, invariably include dairy and eggs for complete protein, essential fats and vitamins. There are no vegan societies for a simple reason: a vegan diet is not adequate in the long run.
Protein deficiency is one danger of a vegan diet for babies. Nutritionists used to speak of proteins as “first class” (from meat, fish, eggs and milk) and “second class” (from plants), but today this is considered denigrating to vegetarians.
The fact remains, though, that humans prefer animal proteins and fats to cereals and tubers, because they contain all the essential amino acids needed for life in the right ratio. This is not true of plant proteins, which are inferior in quantity and quality — even soy.
A vegan diet may lack vitamin B12, found only in animal foods; usable vitamins A and D, found in meat, fish, eggs and butter; and necessary minerals like calcium and zinc. When babies are deprived of all these nutrients, they will suffer from retarded growth, rickets and nerve damage.
Responsible vegan parents know that breast milk is ideal. It contains many necessary components, including cholesterol (which babies use to make nerve cells) and countless immune and growth factors. When breastfeeding isn’t possible, soy milk and fruit juice, even in seemingly sufficient quantities, are not safe substitutes for a quality infant formula.
Yet even a breast-fed baby is at risk. Studies show that vegan breast milk lacks enough docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, the omega-3 fat found in fatty fish. It is difficult to overstate the importance of DHA, vital as it is for eye and brain development.
A vegan diet is equally dangerous for weaned babies and toddlers, who need plenty of protein and calcium. Too often, vegans turn to soy, which actually inhibits growth and reduces absorption of protein and minerals. That’s why health officials in Britain, Canada and other countries express caution about soy for babies. (Not here, though — perhaps because our farm policy is so soy-friendly.)
Historically, diet honored tradition: we ate the foods that our mothers, and their mothers, ate. Now, your neighbor or sibling may be a meat-eater or vegetarian, may ferment his foods or eat them raw. This fragmentation of the American menu reflects admirable diversity and tolerance, but food is more important than fashion. Though it’s not politically correct to say so, all diets are not created equal.
An adult who was well-nourished in utero and in infancy may choose to get by on a vegan diet, but babies are built from protein, calcium, cholesterol and fish oil. Children fed only plants will not get the precious things they need to live and grow.
Nina Planck is the author of “Real Food: What to Eat and Why.”
My response...
In 2003, a Collingswood , NJ couple was charged with starving four of their adopted children over several years. One child died. The issue was clearly neglect. Yet the headlines did not read "Omnivores Starve Child to Death."
Let's see all these sad cases for what they are--neglect.
And let's see Ms. Planck's op-ed for what it is--an opportunistic misrepresentation. Ms. Planck is a businesswoman who has vested interests in the meat and dairy industries. She is not a nutritionist (which becomes clear when she touts the benefits of lard in her book). She conveniently fails to mention in her op-ed that several plant sources of DHA exist. And she conveniently fails to acknowledge the countless thriving vegan babies and children. With veganism growing in popularity, it makes sense that Ms. Planck would resort to such scare tactics. She has a lot "at steak," pun decidedly intended.
126 vegabytes:
What an unbelievable article. It's so over-the-top, with a scare-tactic tone seems like something ridiculous that's normally on the cover of the Enquirer.
Love your response.
Hello my dear UV! My feelings exactly when I read that bs op-ed piece. It made my blood boil. I too was going to post about Nina Planck, but I thought I'd calm down a bit first.
And my thoughts exactly, when you mentioned the article about an omni family that killed their baby through malnutrition...these baby deaths were caused by the ignorance of their parents.
If you go on her website, she has a piece titled Vegan Tragedy where she mentions that the vegan diet is an aberration in human dietary history. She is so biased & she could be a Rick Berman, protegee & be a member of The Center for Consumer Freedon. She is a so-called food expert & she tries to show you how qualified she is to make idiotic remarks because supposedly she was once vegan.
Nina Planck- Grrrrr! Am going to work on my letter to the NY Times asap.
Her letter makes me so angry. Grr! But your response is concise, and to the point, and hard-hitting. Good job!
I was also really frustrated with her "article", which I found out about because someone on a message board I'm part of who has a child with autism had her boss telling her that vegan's breastmilk could not have proper DHA, blah blah blah.
That makes me so mad too. That lady is stupid...
Our local New Times had a long cover story about a similiar instance. It made me mad too although it did have many "sides" to the stories.

oops, here's the real link:

ok, i dont know why it isn't showing. or it's not on my page. the rest of the link after news/di is the following:
et-from-hell/
which is news/diet-from-hell/
I cannot even believe what I am reading. Such misinformed crap, and in the New York Times.
I love your response. I sure will be sending in mine. Thanks for bringing attention to this issue.
She's right.
In fact, she doesn't go far enough. I think parents who raise their children vegan should have them removed and should be sterilized, then sent to jail for child abuse for at least ten years. Refusing to feed a child animal foods, thereby ensuring his or her brain doesn't develop properly (and there is massive evidence for this) is worse child abuse than beating a child.
VKO: She called veganism an aberration in human history? Wow, I'd call veganism simply "progress."
Opinions and rebuttals are what make differing points of view meaningful!
Ugh, yes I saw this article and was going to post it on my blog as well. This type of media is so frustrating because most people are so trusting....especially when one calls themselves a nutritionist! I thought your response was well-worded, I would have a hard time not being emotional, but that is the best approach to take (not being emotional). I will work on a response as well. We must let the public know that it isn't death by veganism, but death by ignorance.
and too bad for the obvious ignorance in the response from "anonymous"
have a look at the 2007 veggie pride
photos and be sure that we were hundreds of good health walkers !!!
but, yes giving juice to such a young baby is just stupid, but you can be vegan and stupid I am affraid!
How infuriating! The worst is that she claims in the article and on her website that eating fish is necessary for pregnant, breastfeeding women and their babies! When doctors, even in the mainstream are cautioning women against consuming fish during pregnancy because of the high concentration of mercury in fish.
And then of cows milk she claims "designed as it was for the exclusive nourishment of babies, milk is a complete food and nearly perfect"
Cows milk was designed as perfect food for the exclusive nourishment of BABY COWS! Not baby humans! You wouldn't feed your livestock human breastmilk!? Why should you feed your baby cows milk?
I am getting more and more angry the more I look at this woman's website.
Your response is great though, well said.
The fact that these parents were Vegan is irrelevant. They were irresponsbible, end of story.
You have shown us that there is more to a Vegan diet than soy milk and apple juice, huh???? What's that???
"The fact remains, though, that humans prefer animal proteins and fats to cereals and tubers" says who? I'm not a vegan and I don't prefer animal fats???? I don't like to eat fatty foods period.
It is very sad that these parents didn't care for their child but I don't think that Veganism had anything to do with it. Ignorance and stupidity perhaps.
Hey, Urby. Nice to see you post about this and several other educated people as well. :) The facts don't lie!
Being Vegan is like any special "diet"- it takes attention and care to do it right, but once you get into the routine of it, it's smooth sailing from there. Some folks just aren't really dedicated to their health, I guess.
When I was 'vegan' in high school (I use the term loosely) I ate HORRIBLY! I didn't eat tofu, nutritional yeast, seitan or whole grains. Needless to say, I got very weak and it only lasted about 3 months. (I was vegan the "right way" as an adult for 3 years or so; right now, I'm lacto-ovo).
Education is the key, and it looks like you've taken the task of education the public upon yourself- good for you!!
Thank you for sending in such a well written and intelligent rebuttal.
Well said! I hope your letter gets published.
I had the misfortune of reading this blog post and its comments last night and was so pissed off I couldn't fall asleep. The ignorance was astounding.
Ugh- right before I read your well-informed and intelligent letter to the NY Times, I wrote one of my own:
Subject: Death by Ignorance, not Veganism
Regarding your article about the vegan parents who caused the death of their child through malnutrition (Op-Ed piece by Nina Planck, 5/21/2007), I just want to point out the obvious- this child died, tragically, as a result of negligence and ignorance, not veganism. Please look logically at the following 2 facts: many vegan babies and children thrive and grow strong and happy. Many non-vegan children are also abused, neglected, harmed, or killed. There is no "there" there.
I think NP's article was defintely a hyperbole, and considering that nutrition is a very young science I don't think that any one group, including omnivores, lacto-veggies or vegans, can claim to be nutritionally superior. Since contemporary habits of eating are high in processed foods the only thing that I feel 100% sure is that whole foods are the best nutrition. But I don't see NP going off on the many parents I see raising their kids on potato chips and kraft mac and cheese.
However, it doesn't seem that the NJ case really matches the vegan case. The vegan parents seemed to be nutritionally misguided while the NJ parents it appears were abusing their adopted children which IMO is a hell of a lot worse. I would more likely compare it to omni parents who by mistake and ignorance starve their children due to difficulty with breastfeeding.
Ali
Nice response; I'll be waiting to see if NYT decides to publish it. Is it just me, or does it seem like the harshest critics of a vegan lifestyle are former vegans?
The child of "vegan" parents who died was fed too little. His parents were idiots, not vegans. A smart vegan parent knows that breastfeeding your baby is vegan. A smart vegan would have read the label and seen that soy milk is not suitable for infant formula.
And how many children of omnivores have died of malnutrition?
Great response, urban vegan. Well said.
I wrote a letter as well, that article was appaling, and even my boyfriend read it and told me there was no way I could ever have a healthy vegan baby (which really, really got me pissed!).
The NY Times published six Letters to the Editor today regarding the "Death By Veganism" op-ed.
http://tinyurl.com/yplvqq
I guess they got a lot of responses!
Thanks for adding your voice.
Nice response. An interesting discussion of the Death by Veganism article can be found at the following forum:
http://www.healthypages.net/forum/tm.asp?m=450491
Let's fight the ignorance and slant of the original article, and let's counter the propaganda calmly with truth and facts.
Thanks for writing that letter. This situation is just terrible, and the resulting media frenzy is a sad case of Nina Planck exploiting this tragedy for her own personal gain. Disgusting.
As for the ignorant comment by anonymous - it's funny, I feel the same way about parents who feed their children a typical American diet, after all, you are feeding them a diet that has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and all kinds of cancers. Talk about neglect!
urban vegan, I quoted you in my own blog post and linked back to you - hope that's ok.
I saw this headline too and it really upset me. people neglect children ALL the time no mater what their diet is. it's clearly an misleading article.
Two thumbs up for doing something -- too many people complain/whine, but don't react, if you know what I mean ;-)
This article made me so sick to my stomach. Thank you for taking the initiative to write a thoughtful response and inspiring the rest of us to do the same.
Your letter was articulate and well-crafted and your "steak" pun was so clever. I hope it gets published. Nicely done UV.
namaste all.
I am curious as to the 'massive amounts of evidence' supporting the claim that another anonymous poster made that child brain development requires meat. If there is a credible news/research group providing these, i would really honestly like to see them, however my guess is that they stem from the same sources that all the massive amounts of hard science proving that global warming is A) not happening, or B) not the fault of humans stem from. please do us the courtesy of citing your claims in the future if you expect to be taken seriously. Thank you.
p.s. i feel absolutly terrible for those poor parents. I expect that their intentions were the best, and the same as all of ours, and raising a child on a vegan diet requires an astounding degree of awareness and mindfulness. the fact that they lacked that and it cost the life of the child is a horrible, but i honestly expect that it has been punishment enough for those poor people all ready.
That article is a bunch of crap! As a vegan mother of three vegan children, I know this is a load of crap!
Follow up: Clark Hoyt, the New York Times' Public Editor recently (June 24) published a follow-up to Planck's
op-ed piece, essentially calling it one-sided and biased. Yeah!
Here's the URL to the article:
Thanks for article!
Thanks for interesting article.
Glad to read articles like this. Thanks to author!
I was once told to never argue with an idiot, they'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. This qualifies.
Going above this petty crap, i'll say that you miss the real point behind the faceless denigration of vegans and vegetarians, IT'S BECAUSE VEGANS AND VEGETARIANS ARE NO BETTER!
The facts are that being a complete human requires being an omnivore, unless you're not a fan of nature.
Cruelty is your reason for being a vegan/vegetarian? Your ignorance disappoints me. Without the supposed cruelty towards animals, we would never have progressed as a people. Domesticating animals to work for us is the only reason why we could progress in technology. Don't believe me? Look it up yourself on technology cruelty built.
The enviroment perhaps? Don't like how all of our farm animals contribute SOO much to global warming? Once again, your ignorance disappoints me. If you did some real research, you would have found that 2/3rds of the worlds methane gas comes from PLANTS! The real enemy is CO2, get with it.
The only thing this article proves is that you can always have faith in the stupidity of people.
PS. The other cultures that have vegetarian societies aren't Mongolians, Europeans, Egyptians or North Americans. We're the only ones to have had successful empires which result in fundamental advances in technology. I give two cheers for cruelty and laugh at those too stupid to avoid it happening to them. Fight or flight as it goes... all you're doing is running from your humanity.
How many blogs did you cut and paste this sophomoric comment in?
Judging from the way you phrase your illogical, unfounded arguments, I would guess that you are about--maybe 14 years old at best.
I feel sorry for you.
Excellent website. Good work. Very useful. I will bookmark!
Disaster is likely to wreak havoc in the life of an individual as soon as he becomes victim to erectile dysfunction and the most significant dreadful consequence of erectile dysfunction is that the afflicted man becomes incapable of facilitating erections required for sexual intercourse. The sexual vacuum resulted from erectile dysfunction prompts the sufferer to opt for anti-impotency pills, most especially the viagra medication that was approved by FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) as a clinically effective drug to cure erectile dysfunction in men.
