monday in chicago

I spent Monday in Chicago on business. Here's a view of the Windy City, flying into O'Hare.

Although I spent most of the day at a conference, I did find time to walk around and take in the urban landscape.

This is the view walking down Wacker St.

Following the wise recommendation of Kati, I ate dinner at Karyn's Cooked. The soy-seitan-based ribs were slathered in an amazingly complex BBQ sauce. Its many layers of flavor included delicate smoke, Caribbean-inspired spices, and South Side heat, tempered with just the right dose of sweetness. It paired perfectly with the recommended rioja.

Dessert was vegan Lemon Merinque Pie. Lighty, tart and sweet, it was satisfying but not heavy. If you're ever in Chicago--do not pass go--proceed directly to Karyn's.

My company arranged and paid for my night at the Peninsula Hotel, arguably the nicest hotel I've ever visited. Business travel amazes me. I could have easily spent 5 nights in Chicago for the price of one night here.

Who's complaining? It's not every night that you get to watch "Inside the Actor's Studio" while soaking in a hot bath scented with a Lush bath bomb. [Yes, that's a TV facing the tub on the right, below the towel shelving.]

You've been busy since I visited last. I enjoyed catching up on all of your posts. Bossa Nova cracks me up! And your food makes me drool. Imagine a drooling, laughing fool. That's me!
I've never been to Chicago, but would love to go. The name Wacker St. also cracks me up. Ribs look amazing, as does your hotel room. Very swank to have a TV in the bathroom?!

Sounds like a sweet trip. Nice pics!

Chicago looks like a great place! How do they make vegan lemon meringue pie? I thought that was one thing that couldn't be veganised. The hotel looks very luxurious, but to me anywhere with a bed and a tv seems luxurious right now (we have just sold ours!) :)

No, I wouldn't complain either. And what a great view from the air plain.
P.S. nice new blog appearance.

Hi Urban Vegan,

DH and I were in Chicago in April and we ate at Karyn's as well. We are not vegetarian, but do seek out vegetarian/vegan food quite frequently. It was our favorite meal in Chicago! They do a marvelous job serving a variety of flavors and tastes. Chicago is such a great place to visit! Great pictures.

I grew up in Chicago. My brother lives right on the river.

I was just at the Penninsula for a wedding a few weeks ago. I agree, the nicest and most expensive hotel ever(although mine was paid for too).

Did you get to meet Karyn? She looks 30 years younger than she is!

So glad that you enjoyed Karyn's...and that you got dessert! I think they have the finest vegan desserts in Chicagoland, even if everyone always seems to rave about the ones at Chicago Diner instead. The ribs are definitely one of the best things on the menu - you chose well.

I enjoyed your pictures - it's fun seeing familiar sites through someone else's lens.

Chicago is about a five hour five from me, yet i have never been there specifically (drove by it twice though - once in rush hour traffic). You took great pictures and stayed in luxury, however the restaurant Kati mentioned would convince me most that someday it may be worth the effort.

wow!

The food looks great and that hotel... Lifestyles of the rich and famous!

You deserve the pampering..to mix business with pleasure is a wonderful compromise.

Cool- business trips can be so enjoyable, in their random and chaotic way. I've only been to chicago once and I absolutely loved it.

I have been wanting to visit Chicago for a long time now. The downtown pictures are gorgeous.

What an awesome hotel. We have a tv above our tub and I always try to time my tubbing with a program I want to watch.
