a vegan in buenos aires
Being vegan in a meaty city like Buenos Aires was no easy task. Most menus did not offer a single vegetarian option. Even salads were ham and cheese laden and soups were made with meat broth. So how did I avoid starvation in Buenos Aires? In a word....Pasta. And lots of it. About 40% of Argentinians are of Italian desent, so they do pasta well. Al dente. Balanced sauces. Variety. As delicious as it was and as much as I adore pasta, though, eating some form of it once a day quickly got tiresome.
These homemade noqûis [gnocchi] in Uruguay, however, were a noteworthy highlight--fluffy as clouds and lightly coated with an authenic Ligurian cheeseless, nutless pesto.
We ate lunch at Bio, a charming vegetarian restaurant in the Viejo Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. I had the seitan curry with coconut milk--a healthy, tasty reprieve after several consecutive pasta dishes.
Omniman had the tofu in a Dijon mustard sauce.
Cheeseless pizza, like this one I ordered at Filo, was an excellent option, especially when paired with some famous Argentine malbec.
We stopped for lunch one day at a neighborhood cafe and I almost wept tears of joy when I spotted "Soy Milanese" on the menu. It came with veggies of the day, one of which was *oops!* mashed potatoes with butter. [My pitiful Spanish really failed me here. I hate when this happens.]
Although Sinclair, a Spanish restuarant, did not offer a single vegetarian dish, the chef made me this intense, saffron-perfumed vegetarian paella. That's the nice thing about Argentina--most eateries are more than happy to appease you.
In summary, in Buenos Aires, you'll consume tons of delicious pasta, rice and bread. Your taste buds will definitely thank you, but your triglyceride levels will not.

Mmm... looks tasty, shouldn't read such a thing at lunchtime when having nothing to eat! Anyway, sounds hard, but as long as there's something vegan and amazing tango... can't wait to visit there myself! :-)
U.V., i am so incredibly impressed. You did so well in finding vegan foods to eat! And not just the pasta (been there, too, on the road when desperate...) of course. You might want to think about writing a guide to vegan eating out in this world in which we live someday. i know yer a fellow(ette) writer... and you can totally do something like this, complete with photos... Just something i was thinking about when reading this post.
Thanks for sharing!!
It looks like you made out very well!!
Being a vegan is really tricky and challenging while traveling.
Even in India - a paradise for vegetarian food, I find it hard to be a vegan.
yum!!!
All the food looks so good, especially the pasta!
wow!! that's great that you were able to find vegan options while in buenos aires - I don't think I could ever get tired of pasta, haha; it's one of my favorite dishes :0) great pictures!
I had a really tough time when visiting Buenos Aires as well..and we also went to Colonia - beautiful, isn't it? It was 3 years ago now, but I do remember a couple of great vegetarian restaurants in Buenos Aires - I don't remember tofu being a staple of any kind, though!:-)
Loved the city so very much - but made me realize how lucky I am to have so many veggie options at home.
Welcome back!
How nice that they made that paella especially for you! The Portenos can be quite gracious, even if it is difficult for them to comprehend vegetarianism.
But I'm surprised that you had so many problems with the salads. When I lived their about 9 years ago, it was customary to order your salad customized - they had individual bowls of grated carrots, celery, beets, chopped potatoes, peas, chickpeas, eggs, etc and you would tell the waiter what you would like on your salad. Perhaps it is different now.
I also first discovered dulce de leche in Buenos Aires. Yum! I'd love to know if there is a vegan alternative!
Ali
this all sounds very familiar from when I was in Buenos Aries...hmmm, especially the Malbac!
I almost want to feel sorry for you for having such limited food options and then I'm like, "Wait, she was in Argentina! She was having way too much fun - don't cry for her!"
Traveling in Europe has also been tricky at times. Usually cafes will at least have a salad or pizza that you can order without meat/cheese - but France had almost nothing. I just make sure to pack protein bars and peanut butter wherever I go! (-:
I can't imagine YOU tiring of pasta, but I'm happy you found so many yummy things to eat. I love all the pictures.
Everything looks tasty- I'm glad that you were able to do so well in such a meat-laden city. So now we vegans have been forewarned, our meals will be carb-centered in Buenos Aires but we will work it off by tango-ing the night away. I'm sold. welcome home!
Yea I think kleopatra has a good suggestion.. smth like a food version of lonely planet! :)
You seemed to have faired very well - it all looks great. Thanks for taking us on your travels!
Looks like you had a nice trip despite the limited choices in food selection! The pictures on the previous post were a nice cross-cut of the culture!
Boy oh boy, does that food look good! You really got me ready for my breakfast now!
I feel icky after eating pasta, so I commend you for your efforts. It looks like you fared well--that pizza looks tantalizing.
I am seriously impressed at how well you managed to eat there. Good job!
hey there, i mentioned your post on my blog about buenos aires, in a short article on vegetarian and vegan food in the city:

keep up the great food blogging :-)
Cheers,
Alan
well, that link didn't really work i guess, let's try again...
Buenos Aires Vegetarian and Vegan Food blog post
that's better :)
A veggie myself, I was both enamored with my trip through Uruguay and Northern Argentina this spring and horrified to often find meat flavor accompaning my non-meat dishes. It sounds like we visited many of the same places to eat. I was so happy with my experience at Bio. Yum! But my favorite place in Argentina was a little pub in Mendoza that served vegetarian empanadas! It was the only place I found during 3 weeks that served a vegetarian version of this typical dish. And god, were they good! Spicy corn and roasted red peppers in a flaky crust. I wonder how much a plane ticket to Mendoza is right now...
You did really well in the beef capitol of the world! That gnocchi is calling my name. Loudly. I thought Puerto Rico would be pretty hard to negotiate with a combination of veganism and pitiful Spanish skills, but it turned out to be so much better than expected!
thank you for the culinary adventure! seriously, how neat. I agree with kleo, you should absolutely write/compile a vegan travel guide to the cities you've been/eaten in.
you realise that the pasta here is all egg noodles, right? And the pizza crust has both milk and egg in it.
Anonymous--
I ordered dry pasta--which has no eggs.
And I've never heard of pizza crust with milk and eggs. I've never ever seen a recipe as such.
oh i am so happy to see this! i just found your blog and travelled back in time to this entry - i spent a month in BA this summer and had a relatively difficult time finding vegan food also! there's a place in san telmo that is all vegan, but i never made it to bio! i remember setting out walking there from palermo and getting a little sketched out and turning around :-( i ended up going to the grocery stores which surprisingly had a lot of decent soy products. i was working on a film and when i told the caterers i didn't eat meat, they kept trying to serve me fish! it was a wonderful city regardless of the constant advertising for 'the best steak in the world'.
