Headhouse Shambles is one of the nation's oldest [if not THE oldest] covered outdoor markets. Its tradition of buying and selling fresh, local foods dates back to the 1750s. After a leisurely Sunday breakfast, Omniman and I browsed the stalls.
I was delighted to happen upon Demerah Naturally. The majority of this business' soaps are vegan, and they smell SO good. The owner has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years.
Summer produce was at its colorful peak.
Omniman and I navigated the crowded market and came home with:
- A large bunch of purslane
- A healthy pound of sugar snap peas
- 4 zucchini
- 2 cucumbers
- A pungent bouquet of basil

Since it was a clear, beautiful Sunday, South Street was buzzing with tourists who were visiting Philadelphia for the 4th of July celebration. We dropped off our groceries at home and went for a run.

I decided to make Vegan Saag Paneer for dinner. First, I finely chopped a ton of organic spinach.

After pressing extra firm tofu for 1 1/2 hours [a good time to take a long, leisurely shower], I chopped it into cubes, and then pan-fried it in canola oil to prime it for the Indian spices.

After simmering the spinach and paneer with some soy yogurt, onions, garlic, garam masala, cayenne, and cumin...

... it was time to eat. Omniman provided soothing Eastern atmosphere with tunes from
Asian Massive
. He astutely pointed out that the pressed tofu was remarkably paneer-like.

Instead of making a green salad, given yesterday's peach surplus, I tried the savory peach salad from
Madhur Jaffrey's World of the East Vegetarian Cooking.
It's fun to be shaken from your patterns and to learn that peaches, black pepper, cayenne, and cumin really
do play nicely together.
Vegans Gone Wild! ContestThe contest officially closes at midnight tonight. Thanks to all who entered their decadent delights--it's going to be a tough decision. Stay tuned. I'll announce the winners in the next week or so.

I've never tried vegan sag paneer! And it's a shame, because it used to be one of my all-time favorites. I love the idea of putting soy yogurt in there. And I love trying Madhur Jaffrey's salads- she certainly inspires me to use more cayenne! Your peach salad looks insanely good, and perfect for your dinner.
oh wow, your blog makes me hungry. thanks for the visit.
The outdoor market looks like such fun. And thanks for the tips on saag paneer--I'd love to try my hand.
love the cuisine - and those cherries at the market!!! oh my goodness, how I love fresh produce in season :0)
The sag paneer looks so very good. As do those cherries - love them. You are very lucky to have such a great market.
Extra-firm tofu is so much like paneer.Soy beans are amazing!
I guess it is impossible to be a vegan without using soy products!
Beautiful pictures!
Wow! Could not imagine so much could be made using pure veggies. Will not crib ever again! ;D Great snaps and food. Yummm
Wow! What wonderful pictures and inspirations. I'd love the pie recipe... is it lurking elsewhere in your blog?
I love our farmers market as well, all the fresh EVERYTHING and wow - the colors and smells and all. Makes me want to go make some veggies right now!
Wow! What a wonderful market. Those baby yellow squash look wonderful. We can find them at whole foods once in awhile, but way to pricy.
Great looking dish and I too would have never in my wildest dreams put peaches with pepper and cayenne.
Happy 4th of July!
stunning!!! markets are so fun. and so is paneer. mmmmmm.
The paneer looks GREAT! I recently tried paneer for the first time using a packaged version by Tasty Bite... but yours looks much, much better!! :)
I use tofu as a paneer substitute too! Mmm. Now you're really making me hungry for it.
ça donne super envie
vivement midi !
Wow, that's an interesting combi for the peaches, I never thought it could be combined that way, thanks!
That looks awesome - I want to try vegan saag paneer. Yum. I'll add that to my list and surprise my partner with it sometime soon.

Okay - seeing as I'm East Indian, and have had authentic saag paneer quite a few times - I must say, your version looks INCREDIBLE. Never thought of soy yogurt, but have used tofu a few times. Delicious!
p.s. We never made it to Philly as planned, but we did go to NYC instead. I gorged on Vegan Treats in an insane way.;-)
I am definitely making vegan sag paneer- though I've never had actual sag paneer, yours seems much more appealing.
The outdoor market looks really fun. How great to have that nearby.
Hey, I've tagged you for a "meme" cuz I want to know more about ya! Visit my blog for the details.
Also, love the shots of the market. I haven't checked that one out yet but now it's on my weekend to-do list. :)
Another thing, what will you be doing with your purslane? I still can't get used to the idea of eating a weed I so viraciously pulled all my life!
^^ nice blog!! ^@^
