food & fun in philly :: a photo essay

Doesn't it seem like weekends end before they've really begun?

Friday afternoon, I had lunch with my friend Violet at vegan-friendly Remedy. This Vietnamese hoagie was quite a mid-day treat.

Saturday breakfast was my Double Apple Cake and a tall soy cappucino.

This afternoon, Omniman and I went to the Philly Greenfest. It was heartening to see a gathering of so many people who are concerned about the environment.

Music filled the air....

We took in displays by environmentally responsible companies like Worm Poop.

Vegetable sculptures enchanted both children and adults alike...

And I never get tired of looking at the kaleidoscopic "magic garden" that local artist Isaiah Zagar built.....

For lunch, we stopped at Gianna's for vegan cheesesteaks--our guilty pleasure.

Free is my favorite price, and we came home with fun freebies, including laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and four luscious mini-Larabars [Key Lime and Chocolate-Coffee were our favorites].

And so ends my fabulous, too-short weekend of food, friends, and festivals.

Looks like you had a wonderful weekend. I've never been to Philadelphia, but would love to visit. It's beautiful!

What a fun festival! Always nice to see others concerned for the environment. Did anyone at the festival make a connection between factory farming and the environment? This seems too often overlooked (i.e. inconvienent truth, haven't checkout out 11th hour yet)...

And oh my, I would certainly have the same guitly pleasure if I could get that sandwich down here!

Vegan diet is good for our environment. Vegan diet reduces global warming.

Factory farming has a huge negative impact on the environment.

I guess there would be more vegans if only they knew about the connection between factory farming and the environment.

You were so busy this weekend! The vegan sandwich looks really satisfying.

ah, yet another amazing photo essay of your adventures in Philly, urban vegan!! love it!! the festival looks particularly entertaining; and I love the mini Larabars, haha - I'm addicted to Larabars, but I've never seen the sample size that you got :0)

I really wish I could have joined you at this Green Fair! Love all the photos you shared. Just curious if anybody was making the connection between global warming and meat production? You might also enjoy the book "Fantasy Worlds" by Deidi von Schaewen & John Maizels -- it a coffe table book with pictures of artwork from all over the world similar to "The Secret Garden." and YEAh for free Lara Bars!! :)

I never thought much about Philly before stumbling across your blog but you have opened my eyes and one of these days I will visit - if for no other reason than to eat a vegan Philly cheesesteak and to devour a treat from Gianna's.

Sounds like a wonderful weekend - and yes, you're right some seem over before they've even begun. Free is my favorite price too.

Philly cheese steak was my favorite pre-veg sandwich. I would LOVED a veggie one! YUM.

Weekends are like flashes, Sunday night arrives before you know it!

Looks like a fun festival, I love those sculptures.

The last 2 times I was in Philly Gianna's was closed, one of those times it was by birthday :( The universe is trying to keep me and cheesesteak apart, but why?

MMM... double apple cake, so moist and scrumptious looking!

The Philly Greenfest looks like it was a fun and successful day. And no one can ever complain about free stuff. I love LARA bars and have had all the regular flavors- how did the other 2 compare?
