25 money-saving kitchen tips
for frugal vegans

Unfortunately, many people still assume--incorrectly, of course--that veganism is expensive. If you eat costly packaged food and store-bought faux meats everyday, being a vegan will certainly bust your budget. Take heart. Even small adjustments to your thinking, habits and food preparation methods can make a huge impact on your wallet, as you'll see from these tips--most of which have the added benefit of being environmentally-friendly. Feel free to add your own money-saving hints as comments.

  1. Bake your own bread. It doesn't take much hands-on time and can save your about $3 a loaf. For a married couple, that adds up to $156 in a year.
  2. Freeze your assets. Freeze leftovers, food that's just about to turn, or produce overflow.
  3. Cook beans from scratch and freeze them in ziplock bags. You'll have fresh, cooked beans at a moment's notice and at half the cost of canned beans. [Canned beans are still a good value in my opinion, though. They have saved me from succumbing to the takeout menu many times.]
  4. Consider the long-term financial implications of organic. Sure, buying pesticide- ridden, traditional produce like peppers and peaches, may be cheaper in the short-term. But since many of these chemicals are banned in other countries, it's not unreasonable to treat them with extreme suspicion. Think of organic an investment in your health.
  5. Make your own faux meats. If you must have faux meats, seitan is simple to prepare. Make several batches at once, and freeze the leftovers in plastic containers.
  6. Pack your own lunch. This habit has saved Omniman and me thousands over the years. Consider this: A basic sandwich in Philadelphia costs about $6 plus $2 if you want a drink. By those calculations, Omniman and I are saving $1,920 each per year. [$8 x 5 working days x 48 work weeks, minus vacation ]
  7. Don't buy what you already have. Why purchase Tupperware, for example, if you have access to plastic Earth Balance tubs? Don't recycle a plastic lunch bag after just one use. Rinse it out and use it again.
  8. Remember: packaged foods [please only choose healthy versions!] are still cheaper than eating out. Restaurant meals are our main source of entertainment, especially since we have access to so many great eateries here in Philly. But we try to limit our excursions to weekends. Packaged foods, judiciously used, have deterred us from eating out on countless weeknights, after particularly trying days on the job.
  9. Pass on plastic bottles of water. Bottled water is an environmental and economic bane. Fill your own water bottles to take with you.
  10. Use cloth napkins. Not only are they more elegant than paper, they also cost less in the long run, and are kinder to Mama Earth.
  11. Know how much stuff costs. This takes some practice, but if you become familiar with how much things cost, you will develop a nose for a bargain. Keeping a "price book" can help you develop this $-saving skill.
  12. Stock up. When an item you frequently use goes on sale, stock up. It's money in the bank, even if you need to store 10 bags of flour under your bed.
  13. Buy seasonal produce. Not only does it taste better, but it also tends to cost less.
  14. Grow your own. If you have a yard or patio, raising your own veggies will save you a huge chunk of change. I don't have an outdoor space, but I do grow herbs indoors.
  15. Make the time-consuming stuff. Cookies. English Muffins. Bagels. Popcorn. Try it once and you'll see it's not as hard as it looks.
  16. Borrow your cookbooks from the library instead of buying them. OK, here's where I could use an intervention.
  17. Ethnic grocery stores are your friends. They'll outprice Whole Foods any day.
  18. Never, ever throw food away. My parents grew up during the Depression, so this notion was branded into my brain at an early age. Freeze leftovers, or find a way to reinvent unsuccessful dinner "experiments."
  19. Before you go grocery shopping--make a list. Set a budget. And stick to it.
  20. Some appliances are investments, not extravagances. My ice cream maker has paid for itself many times over, for example, in pints of sorbet and soy cream.
  21. You can can. A small investment in equipment and time can yield huge savings, especially if you garden.
  22. Give edible gifts. Not only are they greatly appreciated, but they are also healthier and less costly than giving traditional presents.
  23. Pay less for kitchen wares. Scout out bargains at flea markets, garage sales and in thrift stores. You'll find something chic--and cheap.
  24. Put a lid on it. Water will boil faster, and you'll use less energy, if you put a lid on the pan.
  25. In this age of conspicuous consumption, remember this old New England adage: "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do, or do without."

I'm a fellow Philadelphia vegan. What are some of your favorite farmers markets/grocery stores/places to get cheap vegan food in the city?

ken said...

Bringing together 20 + 1... I've been milling my own flour to use for baking bread (and other things). The mill cost around $100 and the organic wheat berries are almost insanely cheap compared to store-bought flour. And it's so much better in terms of freshness, taste, and nutrition.

Also, using a sourdough starter (easy enough to make and maintain) instead of packaged yeast also keeps costs down.

Great list.

#17 is a great tip. I'm just astounded sometimes at the difference in pricing between big chain groceries and small, ethnic groceries on certain items. And the produce section at the big international grocery is a lot more fun than Kroger!

I LOVE YOU
this blog has helped me out of many a "what are we having for dinner?" dilemmas with your brilliant seasonal lists
it helped me take the leap to buy my first soy cheese [totally addicted to vegan gourmet]
and now you help me save money
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CANT DO?!

Melisser; the Urban Housewife said...

Another brilliant list! I'm proud to say I do many of these!
I think most people underestimate the power of bulk bins, I save SO much money utilizing them.

Tracy said...

Great post! Veganism is so much cheaper than a SAD diet. We just bought our weekly groceries for four at a local produce store and walked away with four cloth bags loaded with food for $40. I looked at the other cash displays and most omnis spend $100+.

Liz² said...

ooh, amazing list! I'm proud to say I do pretty much all of them, except oops, #19 - making a shopping list and sticking to it would be GREAT, and it would save me hundreds over the year, I'm sure... something to work on, I guess.
oh, and my favourite tip is using old plastic containers! they just have so much character compared to their store-bought counterparts!

Ashasarala said...

Thanks for all the tips. Some of them I've been following closely already but you mentioned some things I didn't even think of!

The idea for cloth napkins is simple, but great! I gotta go get me some now. =)

Joselle said...

What a great list! I never thought of using cloth napkins either and I'm definitely going to invest in some now.

One of my frugal/eat and live better goals this year is to start gardening. I'd at least like to try my hand at growing a small pot of herbs. The amount of money and goods I've wasted buying whole bunches of fresh herbs only to use a small bit is obscene.

"Learn to use what you have got, and you'll not miss what you have not".. Quote from cartoon "Underdog" with the voice of the immortal Wally Cox.. It is, and sounds profound- then you tell people a cartoon character said it!

KaKi said...

Thank you for this list. I am desparately trying to cut corners and some of these ideas, I'd not thought of. I may have to look into milling my own flour. But where do you look to buy and what do you buy?

Ken, you can use a sourdough starter as yeast? In a bread machine? How do you start one?

bittersweetblog said...

Excellent, excellent suggestions! As a poor college student, these ideas could really help me out. Thank you for this post, it's truly inspiring.

LeisureGuy said...

I don't quite understand the title. The tips look as though they would save money for anyone, regardless of diet. Nothing especially vegan about this list, except possibly #5, but of course omnivores also eat faux meats.

Rural Vegan said...

Great list, UV. I'm with you on most of the itemst, but do need to be better about putting lids on pots when I'm boiling water. For some reason, I never bother. And I love this quote: "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do, or do without".

SnickersMum said...

I was just directed to this post from Slashfood. I love it!

Jonathan said...

Save $3 per loaf? I didn't even know it was possible to spend $3 on a loaf in the first place... I buy artisan bread from the grocery store cheaper than that.

I do make my own bread every couple of weeks, but I don't save any money. The cost of ingredients works out to be the same... but then, this is because the only yeast I can buy around here is ridiculously expensive. Go figure, cheap bread, expensive yeast.

Mel said...

johnathan, to save $ on yeast look for the bulk packages of yeast. Mine is about a pound of yeast for $5. I store it in the fridge and it has lasted me for 2 years.

Kristen said...

fantastic. With the rising costs of groceries, this is just the list I needed! Thanks for the great ideas.
I've started putting together some posts on my own blog about the transistion from a meat eater (ick) to a vegetarian. I look forward to reading more!

Tanya Kristine said...

damn. this is going to take some discipline. the plastic bag thing is hard...then i have wet plastic bags everywhere.

i like the cloth napkin idea. never even thought of that.

Chris said...

You are the queen of lists urban vegan...

I just made my own bread yesterday after passing on a $3 loaf at the local megamart that had honey in it. The ingredients probably cost $1.50 so I'm not getting rich here but that's one less plastic bag I'll toss too - and a fresher loaf of bread.

Theresa said...

Thanks for these! I do lots, but some are new ideas to me.

I would add these suggestions: get to know your local supermarket's mark-down cycles. For example, Monday through Wednesday after 7 pm all the bread is marked down at my place, or Tuesday morning is a good time to find veggies and soy products reduced to clear.

And, if you have electric kettles, toaster ovens, and other small appliances, they use less energy (and therefore less money) than boiling water on the stovetop, or turning on the oven.

Theresa said...

Oh! And join a food co-op or shop at local markets. Stuff is cheaper.

Kelly said...

These are all good tips and many of them I've already implemented. I will say another is to take advantage of frozen organic veggies. They are often much cheaper than fresh, especially if you're looking out of out of season items.

The only thing I'm careful of is if I reuse a tub, I do not reheat food in it. Most store packaging is not made to stand up to microwaves and it seems we're just learning more about toxins in reusable water bottles and other food packaging

Great list. Gald to say I follow most things mentioned.

As far as books concerned I rarely buy any now as most info I want is on the Net. For fiction I use the library and always have.

I also use a pressure cooker as a great energy saver and hope to get a bread maker sometime as cannot seem to make it manually.

Veg*Triathlete said...

Great tips for frugality! For me, one the biggest cost saving factors is shopping from the bulk bins at the co-op. Grains and flours, etc are so much cheaper that way. We've also got an amish dry goods store in the town south of us, and that's a great way to save some money.

Sarena Shasteen said...

I love this post! I am so...dare I say "cheap"! These are all great ideas. I live by almost all of them on a daily basis. Thank you for saying it out loud...it is so comforting to know that there are others out there like me!

I can't agree with you more about ethnic grocery stores. The produce at my local Indian and Vietnamese stores is super fresh and super cheap. And the prices for staples, such as rice and oils simply cannot be beat!

Melody Polakow said...

You rock!!

It is sooo easy to be a frugal vegan!

I actually teach frugal vegetarian cooking classes because I can't stand the misconception (and the vegetarian classes always feature vegan food... but I don't call it that or talk about veganism until they are in the classroom! hehe.. so they are getting accidental vegan classes!)

Mikaela said...

Great list! :)

Vegan_Noodle said...

I just love your lists UV. I could use some intervention on the cookbook thing as well! We all have our weaknesses...

Joselle said...

leisureguy, I agree that this list is applicable to those who adhere to a number of diets and lifestyles. That being said, I think it was titled "vegan" because a) it's a vegan blog and b) some people think it's more expensive to be vegan due to the high cost of meat substitutes and other processed foods. But focusing on eating whole foods and cooking at home really defrays the cost, vegan or not.

At least that's what I'm thinking. :)

You got it right, Joselle.

Great tips!
Making our own lunches is a must!
I can't even imagine not doing it.

Bianca said...

My fave tip is freezing. When I started saving my leftovers this way, I no longer needed to buy over-priced veg TV dinners for my workday lunches. Now I just pull a homemade frozen dinner out and take it to work. And since I freeze them in reusable Tupperware, it also causes less waste.

Another tip for the not-so-squeamish is dumpstering for slightly bruised produce during the winter months. Our Memphis Food Not Bombs chapter does this.

Well done. I love the last one.

Love the comments -totally fits me! I am always onto my husband about putting a lid on the water to help it boil more quickly. However, I wonder about the rewashing of plastic baggies. I do use aluminum over and over again, but try to avoid the plastic bags. I do believe that you can't really re-use the plastic tubs because you can't get them clean enough in regular soapy water, and dishwashing them releases the toxins that someone else mentioned. I guess I just try to buy as much as possible in recyclable containers or no container at all - gotta' love veggies! Reminds me of a recent tip of yours about the plastic produce bags at the grocery store!

A Dog's Best Friend said...

Here's another tip: When you have to choose between organic and "conventional" produce, choose based on the amount of chemicals generally put on a type of food.

For example, peaches, apples and bell peppers get the worst ratings when it comes to pesticide treatment. But, very few chemicals are used on "conventional" onions and avocadoes so you could save money on them without injesting lots of nasty shit.

One of our local health food stores has a quick sale rack with discounted produce and bread, usually in perfect shape to eat that day.

I rarely make a list though - what I make depends entirely on what looks good, what's on sale and what's on the mark down rack.

Oh, and napkin rings were devised so that people could identify their own napkin and reuse for more than one meal, which makes cloth an even better choice.

Great post, as usual!

I'm a German vegan living in the UK and i can only say: no matter where you live, a lunchbox makes all the difference! I love filling my bright pink (i know...) lunchbox with vegan treats and can't believe just how much money that saves me. I even take my own little cafetiere and some soy milk to work, considering a Starbuck's Soy Latte is £3 ($5) a pop over here...

BTW: Gorgeous cats!

Denise said...

Great list! Two things I'd like to add -

- plastic bags - I almost never use these anymore since we switched to bento-style lunchboxes. We got cheap bentos at the dollar store and load them up with our lunch, attractively arranged, and not only do we not have plastic bags to mess with, my kids waste less. We have insulated bowls (also from the dollar store) for the wet & gloppy stuff.

- price out your recipes, and keep a price list. For example, I was surprised to find that Wild Oats is actually CHEAPER for oatmeal than either Trader Joe's or my food coop. I never would have found that out without a price list, you always just automatically assume Wild Oats is the most expensive option for anything :-)

One small quibble - please don't REALLY store flour under your bed unless they are in airtight containers unless you WANT mice and bugs under there too :-)

#6 - I think your estimation is way off. You still have to pay for the food that you make at home!

Karen Smith said...

To get out of the winter doldrums, my like-minded friends and I trade recipes and do potlucks to get everyone excited about new foods.

My mother-in-law gave me cloth grocery bags years ago, such a forward thinker. I am ashamed to admit I only just started using them, but now I'm hooked (even with the wacky looks I get out in Suburbia.) She also uses cloth napkins. I think I will ask her for some...

Compost your (vegan) food scraps. It's just good for the environment, and that compost enriches your soil so your next year veggies will be even better. Don't need a fancy composter. Dig a hole. Toss scraps in. When it's full, cover it up with some dirt. Dig another hole. Rinse. Repeat. I got through 6 inches of Chicago clay doing this.

For a garden, don't be limited by your space or your concept of a vegetable garden. I grow tomatoes in large pots by the end of the driveway. My own little drive-through. I plant basil by the poppies. By the time the poppies are done late-June, the basil is starting to stalk up. If you choose to plant arugula - do so at your own risk. That darn plant seeds itself like a college fraternity boy. I pull it from the cracks between the patio pavers all summer long. This year I will pull the yellow flowers off before they go to seed.

Dig potatoes into existing beds, plant chives as a way to fill in for the spring, the purple flower heads are edible too. One zucchini seed will go a LONG way. Give it room, and harvest as soon as they are six inches or so. If they get too big, well, marinate slices in some balsamic vinegar and grill them (they're really awfully dry otherwise.)

I could go on all day with the things I've learned the hard way in my garden!

OH - one last thing. BUY LOCAL! Support your local Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) and other farms. While they may not be certified organic, you can go talk to the farmers, many are working their way toward certification or use very very few chemicals in the production of the food. And it just tastes better!

I think the list is great.

The logic on bringing your own lunch definitely has merits both financially and nutritionally, however I'm unclear on your cost savings calculations. If going out a sandwhich costs $6 and a drink is $2 how can you save $8 dollars per day? If you bring lunch it is bound to cost something so while you would save money you have to subtract cost of the ingredients for whatever you make.

I've been looking for a lot of recipes to make large amounts of and freeze leftovers, stews and hotdishes work great for 1 container heat and go.

You wouldn't necessarily have to go to the library for recipies if you have online access there are numerous free websites. One of my favorites let's you pick the meal you like and it even makes your grocery shopping list for you, helps me keep to a list.

tastyplanner.com is a good one.

Mollie Katzen at a bookstore appearance suggested buying fresh veggies at your local farmer's market then blanching them when you get home. Blanching locks in a lot of the vitamins, reduces mass on things like chard so it's easier to store, and blanched veggies will last longer in the fridge.

Also, blanching is pretty easy. Boil some water, immerse the veggies for 20 sec or so, then put them in a cold water bath to stop the cooking process. Dry off and store...

Laura Meehan said...

Buying some ingredients at Winco, even though it's kind of a horrible store, saves a lot of money too. I buy my yeast there for about half as much as it costs at Safeway.

-"Give edible gifts"

Come on it’s not World war

-"Pay less for kitchen wares. Scout out bargains at flea markets, garage sales and in thrift stores. You'll find something chic--and cheap"

And you will eat from someones rubbish?
Wow from flea markets used one?

One more little tip that has saved me a lot of $ over time - every week I 'post' my grocery receipt on the side of the fridge and then as the week progresses, anything that I've
a) thrown away
b) allowed to perish before using
c) couldn't find a use for
d) just didn't feel like eating
e) liked less than I thought I would
.. all gets crossed off or noted. Things that I missed and wished I'd purchased get added to the end. It sounds strange but its kept me accountable to those 'ooh lets try this random thing that I'll have to research recipes for' items many times and has been a good reminder to stop making impulse purchases without planning for their use and actually using them.

Mike said...

Don't forget the Catering supply store. Pots and pans are dirt cheap and of extremely good quality. I use a $28 non stick fry pan that has thicker metal than everything at the higher end stores that run up to $300 a piece. Everything is thick, well made and designed to be beaten up over and over again. And the best part if you destroy a pan, toss it in the metal recycling can with no guilt and get a new one.

In re: buying the equipment: getting a soy/rice/almond milk maker has more than paid for itself over the last three years. It takes about $15 minutes total to make. Considering that organic soy beans cost, at most, $0.89 per pound, and you only need about one cup to make one batch of soy milk, the savings really, really add up. Also, you can then flavor to taste, using dates, or brown rice syrup, etc. I try to use Sunday's to bake the bread for the week, make a few batches of soy milk, and plan some of the "more complicated" meal experiments.
Great post!!!

Hi! I just found my way to your blog. This is a great list. I've recently started baking my own breads for a variety of reasons, including budgetary ones. I find that making bread and making stocks help to ensure the use of all sorts of leftover bits that might otherwise end up in trash or the compost heap.

I write about my own kitchen exploits in the Kitchen Empress: http://kitchenempress.blogspot.com/

(I'm not vegan, though I emphasize natural, unprocessed local foods in my cooking and blog.)
