i <3 my sprouter
I love sprouts. But I hate paying for the overpriced, environmentally unfriendly plastic containers that you find in supermarkets For awhile, I relied on the mason jar sprouting method, but let's face it, tiny pint jars have their limitations.
A few weeks ago, I bought this nifty three-tray sprouter. Now, I'm officially smitten. Using the 3 interchangeable trays, you can easily sprout up to 3 different kinds of seeds at once [pictured above, from top to bottom: alfalfa seeds, lentils and mung beans]. It uses the drip irrigation system: just pour water into the top tray and watch it trickle down, providing each tray with the perfect amount of hydration and hothouse-like warmth. It even seems to be UrbanVegan-proof! Using mason jars, I never had any luck sprouting persnickety little alfalfa seeds. Now, I am up to my ears in alfalfa sprouts. [It also helps if you expose your sprouts to sunlight.]
We adore the crunch that sprouts add to sandwiches and salads. But frankly, raw sprouts [like mung bean sprouts] are one of my all-time favorite snacks.

What a cool sprouter... I always use mason jars (often the half gallon ones) with excellent luck... but I'm so into gadgets, I want this! (the mason jars take up a lot of room and I have very little room in my kitchen now.
I adore sprouts and will NEVER buy them in the store.. they rinse them with bleach water and I can taste it on the sprouts. Totally ruins sprouts..
i want one :)
I don't buy them either--my understanding is they're one of the worst culprits of food poisoning.
I've seen this sprouty thing at my health store--now I want one!
And then we'll be ready to become raw foodists and make sprout flour! ...Or not.
Thanks for the tip. We've tried sprouting and haven't had much success, so I'm keen to give this a shot.
Homegrown sprouts are great!
Oh too cool! I've been getting more interested in sprouts and sprouting, but have no idea where to start. Maybe I should invest in one of these... It sure looks pretty nifty at least!
New one on me! Makes sense though..
JEALOUS!!! I have the "bioSnacky" jar that I sprout in, and it suits well enough for one! Three tiers though?! That is BAD! (as in really good:-)
Now I want a sprouter--Thanks for showing this--
I've got a sprouter for 10 years now, and this is true how funny sprouting is. Mine is in earth, so adapted for sprouts that don't need light only. It's still too cold for sprouting in my home. I'm waiting for spring...
i never knew such a thing existed! I must get one!
p.s. thx for all the thoughts for my pup!
oooooo, that's fancier than mine!
what a fun and practical gadget. I used to use the mason jar method, but I've gotten out of the habit in past years. I think you've inspired me to get back into it. I've been thinking I need to eat more raw food!!!!
How cool is that? I am totally going to order on for my daughters sixth b-day. Sprouts are one of her fav. foods and well, we have had mixed results w/ the mason jar.
Do I ever love mine, I have the same one as yours.
Sprouts are so expensive at the store and often already starting to go bad.
I'm with you on the sprouter - I love love love mung beans too and between the 4 kilo bags I get from the Indian Supermarket and my sprouter, all my salad and stir-fry needs are covered!
I covet your sprouting trays! I just use a huge jar, but the results are so good- sprouts are awesome.
Mmm, I love pea shoots... they are my absolute favorite. Mung beans, too. I put this sprouter on my Amazon Wish List (thanks for posting the link!) and hop to purchase it soon!
how fascinating!! i would love one of these!
Wow, I may have to try sprouting. Someone gave me alfalfa seeds & they've been just sitting here for ages.
I have a similar sprouter and recently started sprouting again (it has become a kind of spring ritual for me). There are so many possibilities.
Just yesterday, I overheard some of my classmates comparing sprouters, and this type seemed to be the favourite. I will have to get one and start sprouting!
Sounds like a great sprouter! I'm still using mason jars... during summer, they are a pain.
btw, love the new pic! You are beautiful!
oh no! until now I've been happy with my reused-applesauce-jar-sprouting-method, but now whenever I sprout things, I'll be thinking of this...
That's way cool! My husband just turned vegetarian so I've been looking into sprouting a few different kinds. Where is the best place to get seeds to sprout?
Love love love bean sprouts. Another reason to sprout @ home: The sprouts in stores are gassed to make them grow bigger & faster. Yum.
That's a good looking sprouter you've got there! I've had mine for about 10 years and I've actually used it so much it needs to be replaced, all my shelves are cracking!
That is so cool. I'm actually growing sprouts right now in Mason jars. I started with one jar and 1 cup of dry mung beans. But they keep growing and I've now got them spread between three jars. I should invest in one of those...it'd probably encourage me to make my own sprouts more often.
what a great sprouter! I've been using a larger mason jar w/cheesecloth for years, but may have to breakdown and buy one..
what fun! and so cool looking...have you just been trying to sprout anything & everything with your fun new gadget?
I have a tip for anyone new to sprouting; make sure you buy ORGANIC beans or seeds.
You can usually buy these at health food stores in bulk, cheaper than the tiny little boxes (of sprouting seeds) sold at garden centers.
Too cool!
I really have to stop reading your blog - every time I do I either want to buy something or eat :)
very cool! I am pretty new to anything other than alfalfa sprouts and even those have just recently appeared in my diet. Now that I'm eating vegan and mostly raw, I find I have hardly any garbage and buying anything with a package makes me uncomfortable - the check-out person's eyebrows always scrunch up when I dump my cart-ful of unbagged fruit and veg on the conveyor belt :)
I think this contraption is a definite to put on my new "healthy eating, healthy living, cool, funky, fun, have to have gizmo" list!!
Great entry about sprouts! I just took the plunge into the exciting world of sprouting myself.
Here's my sprout entry on my food blog: http://www.vegangrub.com/?p=35
I'm gonna add your blog to my blog links section :)
