coconut ice cream review:
it's a tough job, but someboday's got to do it

Warning: This post contains hedonistic information that may be deemed offensive to the weight conscious, calorie-counting, fat-fearful, raw foodist or ascetic. Reader discretion is advised.

Creamy. Rich. Decadent. These words seem way too wimpy to describe the devilishly toothsome texture of Turtle Mountain's new coconut-based ice cream line. Other words come to mind. Words like ecstasy. Orgasmic. Sinful. Rapturous. Eating this viscous frozen indulgence makes me feel as if I should head straight to confession–and I haven't been to confession since 6th grade. This vegan product truly lives up to its "Purely Decadent" label. Coconut fans will appreciate the delicate coconut essence that's present in most flavors as a pleasant back note.

Here's how Omniman and I rated the five flavors we tried, with 5 coconuts being the best and 1 being the worst:

Cookie Dough: Urban Vegan's Pick
Urban Vegan: 5 coconuts; Omniman: 4.5 coconuts
Fat-toothed cookie dough, accented with dark chocolate chips, swimming in a pleasant, "dulce de leche-esque" base. This would be on my last meal list. [Yes, I ate almost the whole pint in one sitting.]

Chocolate: Omniman's Pick
Urban Vegan: 4 coconuts; Omniman: 5 coconuts
So fluffy and rich that it resembles a chocolate mousse made from heavy cream. A little goes a long way. Next time, I'll try mine with a drizzle of Cointreau or Framboise.

Chocolate Mint
Urban Vegan: 4.5 coconuts; Omniman: 4 coconuts
There's something immensely satisfying about standing in your jammies and eating this straight from the container, using your spoon to break through the chocolate veins. Expertly balanced and refreshing, the coconut base was the least apparent in this flavor, owing to the mint.

Coconut
Urban Vegan: 4; Omniman: 3.5 coconuts
Punctuated by chewy, pleasant flecks of dessicated coconut, this version is much tastier than the coconut ice cream you'll find in your friendly neighborhood Thai restaurant.

Vanilla
Urban Vegan: 3.5 coconuts; Omniman: 3.5 coconuts
Smooth and perhaps a tad too sweet, it lacked the balance that the other flavors had. As good as any vanilla soy ice cream on the market– but not great. I would have liked to experience more of the vanilla bean flecks.

This product will undoubtedly become popular with those who are fearful of too much soy. But I am not raving about Purely Decadent Coconut Milk Ice Creams because of soy-phobia: organic, non-GMO soy is part of my daily diet.

Nor am I coco-phobic. Some folks are scared off by the high saturated fat of coconut milk-based products. But current research is showing that all saturated fats are not created equal, and that when part of a varied, healthful diet, an occasional coconut treat is much better for you than, say, an occasional Big Mac. [Remember: coconut has no cholesterol.] Coconut also contains minerals and lauric acid, a compound which some people think helps break down fat.

A foggy aside

The coconut ice cream samples arrived packed in dry ice. My sink resembled a nimbus cloud after I poured water on the it. [Don't try this at home–especially if you have pets or kids. The carbon dioxide can harm them. I quickly opened all the windows after realizing what I had done.] After a quick Google search, I learned that, to dispose of dry ice, you just need to set it aside and let it sublimate.

I love the Cookie Dough flavor myself!

Those flavors sound nice. We probably won't get that here since we have NadaMoo, which is also made with coconut milk, but that's okay. I support the locals.

I just bought the Mint Chip and it's soooo good. Interesting to know that the coconut flavor is least pronounced in it though. I can definitely taste it (and it tastes awesome), but I'll have to try another flavor more of a coconut flavor next time.

Sadly, my Wild Oats does not carry the cookie dough flavor...makes me wanna cry.

Love that warning. ;-) Still awaiting the arrival of these goodies in my local grocer's freezer, but at least I know now I definitely have something to look forward to.

WOW!! I should really look and see if I can find some of those!

P.S. Bossa Nova looks very regal, presiding over all of the ice cream!

I was totally going to buy this last night at Whole Foods but it was so expensive! I'm going to wait for a special occasion and then indulge! Thanks for the review!

I still haven't tried the cookie dough or mint, but they both sound so good!

Oh wow you're so lucky - coconut ice cream was always my favourite in my pregan days. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for distribution to Australia as we are sadly lacking in vegan ice cream that doesn't resemble rubber in texture!

Oh my, you had me drooling like a maniac with the words "Fat-toothed cookie dough ... dark chocolate chips ... dulce de leche" This cookie dough coconut ice cream sounds too good to be true, I would eat this instead of dinner .... yummy!!! Oh how I wish I can get my hands on these beauties in Perth (Aus) :0/

I need to change jobs and need to get into the business of ice cream import!

The world needs more bloggers like you, willing to do the tough job of taste testing all the foodie goodness out there!

Personally I think there's no beating homemade coconut ice cream. I know that sounds snobby but I don't mean it to! It's really easy to make. :)

My parents LOOOVE the chocolate flavor of that line of coconut-based ice 'cream.' I love that it's all soy-free!! :0)

Hey, I just wanted to tell you how much I like your blog... almost as much as I like this ice cream ;)

Yum! I had my first coconut milk-based ice cream at Maggie Mudd (http://www.maggiemudd.com/index.asp) in San Francisco: coconut chocolate ice cream with brownies. It definitely beat soy milk-based ice creams in creamy richness alone. I'll pick some of these up if I see them in the stores.

Have you tried the line of coconut milk ice cream at Essene? I use "line" lightly because they only have two flavors, one of which is vanilla ginger. I can't think of the name now but it's right at the top of the ice cream case. Absolutely PHENOMENAL--a little expensive but I think it's actually a local product. I discovered it when they were doing a tasting at the grocery store.

Thanks for the kind words. FYI, these items are available nationally at all Whole Foods and set up for any Natural Food store that wants to bring them in through their ice cream distributor. Try them and tell us what you think!!!

Waiting for this ice cream to reach Canada is starting to hurt... :)

Oh I would love them all even if some taste better than the others :) I simply love coconuts, who cares whatever fat they have :p Dry ice is fun! When I was young we had a stage show and the cloud was all over the floor, but it was fun, you could throw them on the floor and have a dance in the clouds :D

Oh, I've been wanting to try those new flavors! I have tried the vanilla so far, and I thought it was pretty good, so it's awesome to hear that the others are even better!
